How Studywell held its search authority through every algorithm change
A trusted academic resource serving students worldwide, rebuilt from the ground up on a global edge architecture, with one brief: keep the authority the content had already earned.

Who Studywell are
Studywell is the kind of maths resource that gets bookmarked, shared in classroom group chats and trusted by A-level students preparing for the most consequential exams of their lives. The audience is global and the content library took years to earn its standing. Partner since 2022, ongoing.
Where the work started
The traffic was global. The platform was not. Page-load times varied widely by geography, and educational content faces particular search pressure: content-quality updates, the arrival of AI Overviews and constant algorithm movement, all landing on rankings that took years to build. The brief was to hold ground, not to chase growth, with infrastructure that lets the content keep doing what it does.

What we did
A ground-up rebuild around how students learn
The platform was re-architected from the database up, with page templates designed around how A-level students actually study: worked examples, exam questions and walk-throughs. A performance budget was set per page type and every load is measured against it. This is what a web build looks like when performance is planned, not audited.

Global edge delivery
Content is delivered from the server nearest the student, across 175 edge locations on every continent. UK, US, European, Asia-Pacific and Middle East audiences are all served from local cache, so the page that loads in Aylesbury loads the same way in Auckland. Uptime and performance run under care and maintenance.

Content structured so engines can read the maths
Structured data tuned for educational content, with mathematical notation marked up correctly so search engines and answer engines understand the answers as well as the questions. Featured results, AI Overview citations and knowledge panel signals are all reinforced by the structure. This is technical SEO at reference-library scale.

Continuous monitoring and hold
Performance and rankings are monitored continuously, with content adjusted ahead of algorithm movement rather than after it. Monthly impressions were sustained between 700K and 1.3M through content-quality updates, the AI Overviews rollout and the regular update churn.

Evidence
Evidence
“Sean and Elizabeth spent an inordinate amount of time stabilising my life's work. I built Studywell because I'm a total maths nerd, and now people all over the world get to learn.”
Natalie Douglas, Maths Global Advocate, Studywell. Partner since 2022.
The results
15.4 million impressions across sixteen months, with the monthly baseline holding above 700K and a peak month of 1.3 million.
155K clicks sustained through term-time peaks and summer dips, the seasonality of education rather than algorithm damage.
Delivery from 175 edge locations keeps the experience equally fast on every continent.
Rankings held through the algorithm shifts of the period, and the maths notation is structured so engines extract the answer, earning AI Overview citations along the way.
