The plumbing: Copilot answers are grounded in Bing
The single most useful fact about Copilot is that its live answers are grounded in Microsoft's search infrastructure: when Copilot needs the web, it retrieves through Bing's index and ranking. The consequence is refreshingly concrete. Visibility in Copilot is, to a first approximation, visibility in Bing plus extractability, and Bing is the best-documented, most directly manageable engine in this whole series.
That is worth pausing on, because most UK businesses have spent years optimising for Google and treating Bing as rounding error. For classic search that was defensible. For AI answers it no longer is: Bing's index feeds an assistant installed on hundreds of millions of workplace machines. The good news is that nothing about Bing visibility conflicts with Google visibility; the same sound foundations serve both, with a few Bing-specific levers worth pulling deliberately.
The levers Microsoft actually gives you
Bing Webmaster Tools. Free, direct and underused. Verify your site and you get Bing's own view of your crawling, indexing and search performance, plus its guidelines stated plainly. If you have never looked, the first visit usually finds something fixable within the hour.
IndexNow. Bing supports IndexNow, an open protocol that lets your site tell the index the moment a page is published or changed, rather than waiting to be recrawled. For a business publishing time-relevant material, guides, availability, updates, it shortens the gap between publishing and being retrievable, and it is a small technical job to wire in. We handle it inside technical SEO.
Structured data and clarity signals. Microsoft's guidance, like Google's, rewards machine-readable clarity: schema that matches the visible text, clean page structure, unambiguous entity information. Bing has historically been forthright that it uses these signals, so the truthful-markup work you do once serves both ecosystems.
The honest basics. Bing's published guidance is unexotic on purpose: crawlable pages, fast loads, genuine content, real authority. There is no Copilot trick on sale here either, and the absence of tricks is the point of this series.
What the citation rewards, on this surface
When Copilot composes an answer with sources, the profile of the cited pages matches what the rest of the series has established, with two emphases specific to the surface.
Work-question coverage. Copilot's context skews professional: procurement-flavoured questions, comparisons, how-does-this-work, what-does-good-look-like. Pages that answer the buying questions of your category, plainly and with evidence, are answering the questions Copilot is actually being asked. Our approach to that coverage lives in search-led content.
Extractable answers. Same discipline as everywhere in this series: question-led headings, complete answers in the opening sentences, one verifiable specific per claim. The answer that survives being lifted out of your page is the answer that gets used.
And the caveat this series applies to every engine: Microsoft iterates Copilot rapidly, and its retrieval behaviour is less publicly documented at the answer-composition layer than the Bing layer beneath it. Where we describe observed behaviour rather than published rules, that is what it is, and this page carries a last-reviewed date and gets refreshed on this address as the surface changes.
Where the opportunity actually sits
Almost nobody at SME level is doing this work. Bing Webmaster Tools verification rates among small UK businesses are anecdotally dismal; IndexNow adoption is thinner still. That neglect is your margin: on a surface with real workplace reach, the table stakes are low because so few of your competitors have sat down at the table. This is the same asymmetry our whole visibility method looks for, the weakly defended ground where sound work wins quickly, and it costs a fraction of what contested ground costs.
What we do about it, and what you can do today
We treat Copilot as Bing done properly plus answer-shaped content: webmaster verification, IndexNow, truthful structured data, buying-question coverage, and manual checks of the answers Copilot actually gives for your category. The AI-search visibility check includes Copilot alongside the other engines, free, human-reviewed.
Reader checklist
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and read what it tells you.
- Check how your key pages appear in Bing search; note gaps against your Google presence.
- Ask Copilot the five questions a buyer in your category would ask; record who it names and cites.
- Ask whoever runs your site whether IndexNow is wired in; if not, it is a small job.
- Validate structured data against visible text.
- Re-run the Copilot questions quarterly; log the answers.
